Skilled Worker

The Skilled Worker category helps employers attract qualified individuals if there are shortages of workers for jobs in the NWT that require formal education, specialized training, or both. This category is for occupations that fall under National Occupation Classification (NOC) TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3.

To be eligible, foreign nationals must be able to demonstrate they have the training, experience and education to fulfill the needs of the job description. The skilled worker must:

  • Have one (1) year of full-time experience within the last 10 years in the same or similar occupation; and
  • Have a valid work permit.

There is a minimum language requirement to ensure the foreign national is able to communicate in English or French. This requirement must be met at the time the application is made and proof of testing must be provided.

For further information about mandatory eligibility criteria, refer to the program guidelines.

If you find a qualified foreign national that you want to nominate, you will need to register in the  NWT Nominee Program online application portal, and the foreign national can then submit an Expression of Interest to the NWT Nominee Program for consideration. Employers of the highest-scoring candidates in the Expression of Interest will be invited to submit an application to the NWT Nominee Program.

Information on the Expression of Interest ranking system and how to submit an Expression of Interest is found here: Expression of Interest | Northwest Territories Nominee Program
