Welcome to the NWT

The Northwest Territories (NWT) makes up a large part of Canada’s North. There is a lot of space to live, explore and play, with 33 different communities and a population of 44,718 people. The capital city, Yellowknife, boasts approximately 19,000 people.

Our winters may be cold but they are spectacular – and the right coat and mittens will always keep you warm! You will fall in love with our warm summers and the long hours of daylight.

In the winter you can enjoy dog sledding, skiing or ice fishing and in the summer there is camping, hiking or canoeing. You can go for an award-winning craft beer, casual fish dinner, or a delicious feast at our many bars and restaurants. If you have children or are planning a family, there are many activities and events for children. The NWT has endless opportunities for adventure and fun!

Moving to the NWT is great for your career. There are lots of jobs and we have the highest median household income in Canada.

The Northwest Territories is a place where newcomers can expect to receive a friendly welcome while continuing to embrace their own traditions and practices. As a result, there are many thriving cultural communities here.
